Hello Grads,

Every year Naismith Basketball invites graduating students to apply for one of three $1000 scholarships.  I have copied information about the Scholarship here:

The Naismith Basketball Association is offering three (3) opportunities for a student from Almonte District High School, Carleton Place High School, TR Leger in Almonte or Carleton Place, or Notre Dame Catholic High School in Carleton Place, to receive a one-time award of $1,000 to go towards their first year of post-secondary education.

The award will be given to the graduating students who best represents the values that Dr. James Naismith brought to the game over 125 years ago – fairness, excellence, inclusion, and fun! The award is only available to students who have been involved in some way with Naismith Basketball during their primary and/or secondary school years (a player, a volunteer, a referee, or a Jr. coach). Full eligibility criteria is listed below.

Applicants must meet all of the eligibility criteria at or before the application deadline:

- Must have played or volunteered for a Naismith Basketball team (Almonte or Carleton Place)

- Must be moving on to post-secondary education (copy of acceptance letter will be requested)

- Must have achieved a minimum of 60 hours of community service during their High School years

- Must write a brief essay (250-300 words) to describe how they exemplify the values of James Naismith and the sport of Basketball

The Deadline for applications is May 21, 2024.

Hello Bears,

I hope you are doing well, the snow today is a bit of surprise compared to our usually sunny spring weather in April.

Please check out this scholarship opportunity.  This is not just for grade 12 students but anyone in grade 9-12.  Applications are now open!

OJEN’s 2024 Bursary Program is open for applications!

Are you a graduating high school student in Ontario? Do you plan to pursue post-secondary studies and a career in the justice sector? Apply now for the OJEN Bursary Program!

22 bursaries are available for students entering post-secondary education this fall. The amount of bursary for each recipient is $1000. When you apply, you are considered for a bursary provided by the Association of Justices of the Peace of Ontario, the Association of Ontario Judges, and the Ontario Superior Court Judges’ Association.

In your application, please describe the justice sector career you are interested in and demonstrate how your post-secondary program will help you achieve this goal.

Good morning, Graduating Bears!

Here's yet another scholarship opportunity for you to look at – this one for those of you going on to study something in the environmental field at college or university. Please have a look at the attachment to access the application and read the following for more information:

The Cliff Bennett Nature Bursary is offered annually to assist graduating high school students who will pursue post-secondary studies in a field related to the natural environment. One or more bursaries of $1000 will be awarded in 2024 to students from our area.

To be eligible:

  • You must be graduating from a school in Lanark County
  • You must be entering a program related to the natural environment at a Canadian post-secondary institution (college, university or technical
  • institute) in the next academic year. (Some examples of past recipients have pursued post-secondary studies in ecosystem and resource management, environmental sciences and engineering, marine biology and zoology, fish and wildlife management or bio-technology)

Criteria considered upon application:

  • Evidence of the applicant’s appreciation of the natural environment and experience in this field.
  • Statement of the applicant’s plans and an explanation of how post-secondary studies relate to and will contribute to the preservation and improvement of the natural environment.
  • Academic achievement, financial need, and special needs
  • Current or prior involvement with the Mississippi Valley Field Naturalists is considered an asset, but not a requirement.

Applications for the 2024 Bursary are due by May 1st 2024.

Again, this year the Canadian Federation of University Women Perth and District are offering $1000 bursaries for individuals identifying as female or non-binary.  Priority is given to individuals demonstrating the greatest financial need.

Applicants are required to submit:

  • a completed application form.
  • a letter of acceptance to a public college or university.
  • a copy of your OSAP estimate of award from this site: https://osap.gov.on.ca/AidEstimator2324Web/enterapp/enter.xhtml
  • Note: the OSAP estimator may not be updated by the time you must submit your application.  Please choose September 2023 as your start date if that is the case.
  • a covering letter explaining why you should be considered for a bursary, your education and career goals, your part time work and/or community activities, and your financial needs.
  • one letter of reference that includes contact information for the referee.  This letter should be from a teacher or employer who can speak to your readiness to succeed in your post-secondary studies.

Below you will find information on one of Canada’s biggest Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Scholarships…..Please read if you are going into one of these fields and are an exceptional student, leader and role model in our school and community.

What are Schulich Leader Scholarships?

Schulich Leader Scholarships are Canada’s most coveted undergraduate STEM scholarships.

One hundred are awarded to entrepreneurial-minded high school graduates enrolling in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math program at 20 partner universities across Canada. Some are valued at $120,000 for engineering scholarships and others are valued at $100,000* for science and math scholarships.

Every high school in Canada can nominate one graduating student each year to apply for the scholarship.

Student eligibility criteria:

  • Graduating high school or Cegep in the 2023/2024 academic year
  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • Plan to enroll in an eligible STEM program at one of our partner universities (see list below).
  • Meet the following criteria:
  1. Academic excellence, AND
  2. Leadership, charisma and creativity.

    Strong consideration will be given to students with financial need.

  • Be entrepreneurial-minded and intend to pursue a career in one or more of the following focus areas:

     

    1. Technology;
    2. Engineering;
    3. Entrepreneurship and business enterprise;
    4. Applied scientific research

     

    We are NOT considering students who:

    • Focus on activism (environmental/political/societal)
    • Intend to become a practicing physician and/or medical researcher (e.g. Doctor, Dentist, Nurse, Psychologist, Pharmacist, Optometrist, etc.)
    • Intend to become a Professor and conduct theoretical research

    The Online application includes:

    • Contact information for two Referees who will upload reference letters in support of the nomination

    All letters of reference and scholarship applications must be completed and received by the February 20, 2024 deadline.

    • The universities you wish to attend
    • Your top three achievements (academic or other) - 50 words maximum per achievement
    • Essay demonstrating why you should win - 600 words maximum
    • Optional essay to outline extenuating circumstances - 250 words maximum
    • Short answer to identify where you see yourself in 10 years - 50 words maximum
    • Copy of up-to-date transcript, credit counsel summary or detailed academic report
    • Headshot profile image for publicity

    Scholarship application deadline including reference letters, is February 20, 2024.


    CPHS is beginning the process to select ONE successful candidate to nominate for this Award.  If you are interested, you must put together a package that contains all but the last two bullets of the online application listed above (the Awards Committee already has your transcript information, and does not require your headshot).  If selected, you must be willing to complete the full online application by February 20, 2024.

     

    This complete application must be submitted to the guidance office by 8am on Wednesday January 10th 2024.

    Terry Fox Humanitarian Award

    This Scholarship is for students who exemplify the humanitarian ideals of Terry Fox by volunteering and giving back to their communities.

    Terry Fox Humanitarian Awards are open to students of all abilities.

    To be considered for the Award, applicants must meet be:

    • In good academic standing.
    • Canadian citizens or landed immigrants.
    • Students graduating from secondary (high) school or students who have completed secondary (high) school.
    • Involved in voluntary humanitarian activities (for which they have not been compensated).
    • Planning to or are already studying towards their first university degree or diploma at a Canadian post-secondary institution.

    Value

    The maximum value of the award is $28,000, dispersed over four (4) years.

    Applications open on November 1st, 2023; they are submitted online and must be completed before the deadline of 11:59 pm PT on December 1st, 2023.

    TD Scholarships for Community Leadership

    TD Scholarships for Community Leadership recognize students who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to community leadership.  Community leadership includes students who demonstrate consistent and outstanding dedication to helping improve the world by solving a social or community problem. For example, a student may be helping to clean up the environment, promote social justice, or fight child poverty. Recipients receive up to $70,000 for tuition and living expenses as well as opportunities for paid summer employment, peer networking and mentorship.

    TD Scholarships for Community Leadership are open to students across Canada who:

    • Have demonstrated community leadership.
    • Are in their final year of CEGEP (for students in Quebec), or high school (for students outside Quebec).
    • Have a minimum overall grade average of 75% (outside Quebec), in their most recently completed school year.

    Applications are currently open; they are submitted online and must be completed before the deadline of November 15th, 2023.

    TD Scholarships for Indigenous Peoples

    Students from the Indigenous community face unique challenges and systemic barriers that can make getting a post-secondary education difficult.  TD Scholarships for indigenous Peoples is  a scholarship program that helps meets the unique needs of students from the Indigenous community.    25 scholarships are available to be awarded annually, worth up to $60,000 over 4 years to help cover tuition and living expenses as well as opportunities for paid summer employment.

    Regardless of your field of study, scholarships are open to First Nation, Metis and Inuit who are members/citizens of a First Nation, Metis or Inuit community who:

    • Have applied for a full-time minimum 2-year program with an approved post-secondary institution for the next year of study; or
    • Are enrolled in, or accepted to, a full-time minimum two-year program with an approved post-secondary institution for the next year of study.
    • Employees of TD and its subsidiaries and their children are not eligible for these scholarship.

    Applications are currently open; they are submitted online and must be completed before the deadline of November 6th, 2023.

    Hello Graduating Bears of 2024,

    There are several prestigious awards coming up, some in the very near future and some a little ways off.  We encourage all of you to be investigating scholarship opportunities on your own so that you don’t miss out on the application deadlines.  I’ve taken this opportunity to highlight a few of the highly competitive scholarships below for university-bound students (some may require a nomination from the school, so read carefully).

     

    Loran Scholar – due October 11th, 2023

    A student in their final year of uninterrupted full-time studies in high school, present a minimum cumulative average of 85% and hold a Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status; based on evidence of integrity, courage, grit, and a high level of personal autonomy.

     

    Queen’s University Chancellor Scholarship

    For the Queen’s Chancellor Scholarship, CPHS is permitted to nominate one applicant from our graduating class.  If you are interested in being considered for this, then you must act very soon and email Mrs. Anderson by October 13th, 2023, stating your intention.  Mrs. Anderson will then notify these students specifically of the next steps.  Final applications for this award are due December 8th, 2023, but you must also apply to Queen’s University on OUAC by no later than November 20th, 2023.

     

    Schulich Leader Scholarship – Not due until January 30th, 2024, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t look.

    This is the most prestigious undergraduate Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Scholarship in Canada.  This Scholarship requires a nomination from your school.  A separate email with details about how to be considered will be sent out;  keep an eye out for it if you are interested in being considered.

    There are more big scholarships and awards available and as we receive the information, we will be sure to pass it onto all of you, our graduating class…..what a great reason to keep checking your school email regularly. 😊

    Each individual university also has their own Major awards with deadlines often set in the fall.  I would encourage you to look at the specific universities you may be interested in applying too so that you don’t miss out.  For example, here are three:


    National Scholarship from the University of Toronto
    – due October 19th, 2023

    A Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected person currently in their final year of Canadian secondary school; intending to begin university the following academic year; a National Book Award nominee or self-identify as meeting the criteria: an original and creative thinker; committed to school and community; a high achiever in academic and creative pursuits; enthusiastic about learning and intellectual exploration.  Please note, if you would like to be considered as a National Book Award nominee, then you must act now and email Mrs. Anderson by October 6th, 2023, stating your intention to apply to the University of Toronto and apply for the National Scholarship.


    Queen’s University Major Admission Awards
    – due December 8th, 2023, but you must also apply to Queen’s University on OUAC by no later than November 20th, 2023.

    Students who demonstrate superior academic ability, creative and original thinking, involvement in school or community activities, and proven leadership can apply for a Queen’s major admission award. Financial need is also a consideration for some of our major admission awards.


    Carleton University Prestige Scholarships
    – due March 1st, 2024

    Students who have demonstrated leadership roles in their extra-curricular activities throughout school and have an admission average of 90%.
